We recently took advantage of a short school and work week and visited Puerto Vallarta, located on Mexico's Pacific coast. It's a beautiful destination with a mix of beaches, cultural attractions, and outdoor activities. We were surprised at how lush it was! It's truly a jungle at the beach. Growing up in California, the Mexico I know is more dry, desert-like. Not Puerto Vallarta!
We stayed in the Zona Romántica, the amazing "Old Town" with a rich history. The area was originally settled by the indigenous Cora people, who called it "Cuale," which means "place where the guavas grow." In the 1960s, Puerto Vallarta became a popular destination for American tourists, who were attracted to its warm climate, beautiful beaches, and laid-back atmosphere. Zona Romántica, in particular, became a popular spot for artists and writers. Then in the 1970s, the Zona Romántica began to transform into a gayborhood, with gay-friendly businesses and establishments opening up along the cobblestone streets. With this backdrop, you can imagine there is quite a lot to see and do!

Now, churches aren't really our thing. But this iconic iglesia is one of Puerto Vallarta's most recognizable landmarks. Be sure to step inside to admire the beautiful stained glass windows and murals.
Los Arcos de Mismaloya is a group of rocky arches that rise out of the ocean just off the coast of Puerto Vallarta. It's a popular spot for snorkeling, diving, and swimming. You can also book a boat tour to take you to the arches and learn more about their history and significance.
